HFS reports how Nuclear Restoration Services leveraged Unit4’s SaaS ERP to form a data-driven future

NRS is a UK-based subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, government mandates led to a complete U-turn on how NRS approached its operations. Mary Kent, NRS’s Head of Digital Transformation and Change, comments: “We’re going from a business that is disappearing to a business that’s now growing.”

HFS reports on how Unit4’s SaaS ERP solution helped NRS reach its corporate goals, focus on its people, and boost security.

With a SaaS model, NRS can embrace a ‘data-led culture’ that not only improves the experience of their employees but boosts organizational agility and reduces costs associated with manual tasks.

Please note Magnox Ltd has rebranded and from 31st October 2023 will be known as Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS). You may find references to ‘Magnox’ in the report, and the direct quotes from the report.

Becoming a “data-driven enterprise” with SaaS

NRS’ existing operations relied on manual and paper-based data management, particularly in HR, which led to siloed data and created issues when attracting modern talent.

An integrated approach, with one single source of data truth, meant employees and management could let data lead their decisions. HFS reports “improved data collection tools used by remote staff and integrated an improved data pipeline” which helps promote data-led decisions across the enterprise breeding an agile, data-driven culture.

Integrated data was vital to reimagine their financial reporting and analysis capabilities. HFS found that for NRS integrated data “simplified reporting and budgeting, enabling people to work more effectively and resources to be better allocated.”

With Unit4 SaaS, NRS could automate certain tasks so personnel in all departments could focus on strategy-building tasks - automation wouldn’t be possible without SaaS. By increasing productivity and saving on IT costs, FP&A is projected to save the equivalent of 50 FTE hours a month, or 2,500 FTE hours annually.

NRS fortified security with SaaS

HFS reports how NRS also used SaaS to fortify their security in the Unit4 Cloud, even with the challenges to security in their industry:

“Magnox’s story is about making a successful leap by using SaaS to switch from a technology-centric to a people-first approach. Along the way, it showed that if a security-sensitive industry like nuclear and energy can embrace SaaS, other industries can too.”

NRS viewed Unit4 as more capable of quickly tackling and remediating security concerns than its internal team. Migrating to SaaS boosted security as a result of Unit4’s deployment of automatic updates and a trusted Cloud platform.

While NRS developed a clear roadmap to digitized operating procedures, it kept the core SaaS ERP free of customization and made it a push-button experience, instantly rolling out security patches without impacting the workforce.

Implementation was key to ensure adoption

One requirement was an ‘off-the-shelf’ solution, this helped depart from custom-built integrations that presented productivity issues, and ensured all staff adopted the modern practices that are bred by SaaS tools.

As outlined in the report, the solution required must be “programmatic, not problematic” and by adopting the SaaS model NRS could use “this opportunity to address the needs of its employees, not technology.”

It’s clear that with data at its heart, NRS can now empower its workforce, save time, and have more business success. HFS notes that the SaaS model not only “improved the ability to train and support staff” but also “lowered the support and training costs.”

NRS can be forward-thinking with SaaS

No matter the industry, decisions should always be made with corporate goals in mind. SaaS ensures that NRS’ growth isn’t capped by its tech stack, but as they continue to grow, they can sustain growth with adaptable software, rather than rigid legacy systems.

By keeping the core Unit4 ERP and HCM with few customizations, NRS can apply its internal IT and operations teams to new opportunities and technologies. IT can spend less time managing custom-built integrations, workflows, and applications, and more time sustaining growing operations.

With SaaS, NRS’ office of the CIO can focus on improving the user experience, resolving user support tickets, enabling new functionality, and strategic business reporting.
